Knol

Knol is another part of Google- if you have a Google account, use your details for that to sign into Knol. A Knol means ‘a unit of knowledge’ and it’s a site where users are encouraged to write articles on subjects that they have an in-depth knowledge of and publish them. You could publish one Knol, or several, and build them into a collection. From an author’s point of view, writing a Knol is a lot different to writing a press release, and you can include more of an informal tone if you wish.

In the past, Knol has been compared to Wikipedia, but unlike the encyclopedic website, there’s plenty more room for personal experience as opposed to academic data. When writing Knols for your business, remember not to fill the paragraphs with sales pitch- it’s not interesting for the reader. Instead try and find a subject that you know a lot about, no matter how mundane, that is applicable to your business and your potential customers.

If you know the subject you are writing about contains specific data, ensure that you reference the source of the information in a bibliography at the end of the article, with relevant links if possible. This ensures that the reader of your article will get as much information from it as possible and providing a bibliography authenticates your information. Once you have written your article and checked it for spelling mistakes, punctuation and grammar, click on ‘Add Knol’ to publish.

You’ll then be presented with a form with separate boxes each for your headline, summary and the main body of your article. After this, publish your article and remember to save the address of it to use when updating your blog and Twitter feeds for extra advertising.

Knols do allow comments to be posted by other users, which is a great way to network with others of a like mind within the same industry or potential customers. Writing plenty of informative articles on a subject you know indepth means that you are likely to be considered as an authority on this subject, thus people are more likely to listen to what you say, repsect your opinion, and most importantly, buy your products.
