Micro-Blogging and Twitter
New Kid on the block
Twitter is the newest kid on the social networking block (at the time of writing) and consists of only status updates 140 characters long as it's primarily a service for use with mobile phones. It's another place to advertise your business and services for free and is relatively simply to set up, but like all social media websites, you do need to interact regularly to ensure you gain the best possible results.
You can attract people to follow you via your 'Tweets' by using keywords applicable to your target audience. We've mentioned joining Twitter before, as it's a great place to let people know you're offering certain services and promotions.
Advertising your blog within a Tweet is known as 'micro-blogging', but for it to be the most effective, you need to write status updates which are more than 'I'm making a brew' and less than 'buy quality printer cartridges now.' Don't try to incorporate any hard sell sales patter into your updates, as that kind of behaviour will often have fellow Twitters 'unfollowing' you.
Try and summarise your blog post in a short, snappy headline with relevant keywords if possible as some of your potential customers, particularly businesses, will have their Twitter accounts set up to automatically follow Tweets that incorporate certain words. Provide information that would appeal to potential customers in the form of a headline, and if possible, like your blog entries, try and relate it to topical events. So after every blog entry you write, consider a headline, and make it into a Tweet.
The aim of the game here is to attract as many potential customers to follow you on Twitter as possible, via your snappy headlines made in reference to your topical blog entry, which will of course bring them to your website. One of the best aspects of Twitter is it's accessibility, as people can check their Twitter accounts on both home PCs and mobile phones at any time.
Also if you can, try and embed your Twitter Feed on your homepage. It shows that you can easily be reached online, and update regularly throughout the day.
